Oh the stress of studying for your driver’s license! It may have even been decades ago, but we all still remember the many rules we had to learn in order to obtain a license. Unfortunately as the days and years pass, we forget many of the laws we were required to know and observe as drivers. And each day, many drivers break these laws. Because the rules are in place for safety, it is important for a refresher course. Avoid needless collisions and tickets by relearning the driving laws you may have forgotten.

HOW CLOSE IS TOO CLOSE?

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, most collisions are rear end collisions. In Oklahoma, tailgating or following too closely is against the law. So, if rear end collisions are the majority of accidents, but tailgating someone is against the law, we have obviously forgotten something from driver’s education.

How close is too close? Obviously when you are stopped in traffic at an intersection, you will be somewhat close to the vehicle in front of you. The time we need to be aware of distance between vehicles the most, is when in motion. A good rule of thumb is to have at least the distance of a car in between you and the car in front of you. However, the distance needed to stop is increased as speeds are increased. So, remember to increase the car lengths as you increase speeds. The higher the speed, the more space you should have between you and the vehicle in front of you.

STAY IN YOUR LANE

Another type of collision that happens is when a car travels out of their designated lane unsafely. There are laws in place to ensure traffic moves safely in lanes. In Oklahoma, you can be heavily fined when you don’t observe these laws. First, do not forget you can be ticketed for not signaling your lane change. It may be a habit the you need to acquire again, but just looking over your shoulder to change lanes is not enough.

Also, not only are you required to signal when changing lanes, you must signal a turn. And don’t forget to stay in your lane when you turn. Stay as far right in a single lane right turn and stay as far left when turning left in a single lane. This law is in place to keep turns from encroaching oncoming traffic.

IF THEY ARE WALKING, YOU ARE YIELDING

Every day we drive our commutes to work, run the usual errands, take the same routes. With driving that is the same daily, we sometimes become lax with the regulations in place for driving. How many times have you approached that four way stop on the way to the store? Do you stop at the stop sign or behind the stop line? Just as a crosswalk at an intersection should not be blocked, same goes for the stop line. These regulations are in place to protect your vehicle from oncoming traffic and to protect pedestrians.

Also, when a pedestrian is present, you must yield to them. This means when they are signaled to walk across the street and your light is green, you must allow them to go first. ALWAYS be aware of cyclists, runners, and pedestrians at intersections before stopping and again before accelerating. Road Rage is at an all-time high with congested commutes and full schedules. No matter if it’s the highway, city street, or rural 4-way stop, there are everyday situations that are frustrating drivers. Even the drive-thru can present a disagreement with driving. So, what is happening? Even if there are more vehicles on the road, there are written laws and unwritten courtesies that we should be observing. However, many times there are two sides to a story…

4-WAY STOP

Our state of Oklahoma has a large amount of rural areas and 4-way stops. Oklahomans are even known for their extreme courtesy when at a 4-way stop, with some drivers insisting the others go before them. Most of the time this courtesy is well taken and ends in multiple happy drivers.

But, everyone has experienced the awkward situation when one motorist is not happy with the order of proceeding through the stop sign. Whether you insist on a driver going before you to be kind or to be extra safe, there is another group of drivers that are from the Right Of Way school of thought. This is what is taught with driving courses and eliminates the question of who goes next. The frustration comes when the courteous driver ends up at the intersection with the Right Of Way driver.

There’s also the driver that arrives later than other drivers but is going straight ahead in the opposite direction and proceeds with the driver opposite of him. This driver believes their action speeds up the process for the others waiting, but others may think this driver should wait their turn. Unfortunately, with so many ways of proceeding through a 4-way stop, people become frustrated when their way is not the action of the other drivers.

What is happening is driving laws vs courtesy vs safety. And perception is the deciding factor. The problem is the increasing assertion of one driver’s thoughts, behaviors, and methods on the road being better than the motorist that doesn’t do the same.

Some drivers believe that you should get over into that single lane as soon as you are aware of it. Others will drive past that lane and merge in at the last minute.

Studies have been done and this merging at that last moment is supposed to be the best procedure. As a society though, when a driver is ruled rather by common courtesy, perception becomes the deciding factor in whether or not there will be tempers flaring.

DRIVE-THRU CONFUSION

Even the closest fast food drive-thru may turn a driver into a vigilante. Fast food has advanced their drive-thrus by doubling up, offering two lanes of service. The confusion for some comes when these double lanes are built differently. Some have two lanes with no designated lanes and the two lines form next to each other. Other restaurants have cones that guide a line of cars in a single lane, then it splits when you are to choose a screen. This second method is used to allow for inside diners the room to get out of parking lots. But what do you do when you have used the single lane method and then are presented with the open 2 lanes? Do you still stay in that single land to help those dining inside or do you jump into that second lane to get cars moving through faster?

Whatever you decide in any of these situations, be prepared that not everyone will agree with your choice and you won’t agree with theirs in other situations. The most important thing is to avoid any type of altercation or collision while trying to prove your point. Being a vigilante behind the wheel ultimately will not correct the other’s driving or way of thinking. They truly perceive that you are doing wrong also. And just like with politics, you won’t be able to change their mind.

THE STEPS YOU MUST TAKE AFTER HITTING A PARKED VEHICLE

The majority of hit-and-run accidents involve a parked vehicle. And over 60% of those happen in parking lots. You may have been a victim of this type of accident and discovered the damage once you returned to your car. This is the fear of any driver, returning to a damaged car with no idea what happened or who is responsible. Being a victim in the situation can ruin anyone’s day but what if you are the one who hit the parked vehicle? There are actions you must take to protect yourself in this situation.

ATTEMPT FINDING OWNER/DRIVER OF OTHER VEHICLE

Accidents happen! Even with many years of driving experience, a mishap could result in hitting a parked car. The first thought is to move your vehicle. Any accident is disappointing and stressful, but the first thing to do is collect yourself and take photos of the area of contact AND scene. This will protect you from claims of damage that was not caused by you. Once you have taken photos, you may move your car to a safe spot.

The next thought is to write a note with an apology and contact information. It’s a parked vehicle, what else can you do? This is a next step, but not only your next step. To avoid hit and run, you must attempt to locate the owner/driver of the vehicle you hit.

It may be as simple as going back into a party and finding the person or it may be as difficult as happening at the mall. In every situation though, you must try to find that driver. It is best to wait for the driver to return to their vehicle. Document the time you wait by entering a start time in your phone and end time. After a considerable waiting period that your schedule allows, leave a note, then go back into the business where you are parked. Ask for help with employees in locating the driver. There may be an audio system to announce the vehicle or an employee that recognizes the vehicle belonging to another employee. The steps you take in finding that driver must also be entered on your phone, further protecting yourself against a hit-and-run charge.

THE NOTE

After a good time in waiting for the owner of the vehicle you hit, it is advised to write out a note to be left on the vehicle. Unfortunately, you are at fault, so you know any note admits this. Because you are being honest in informing the vehicle’s driver, you should also protect yourself including the steps you took once you hit their car. You may be the most honest person in this situation and must protect yourself with any false claims. Include your contact information in the note with name, email address, and your insurance provider’s name and number. Also, mention you have photos of scene and damage. Finally, include the time you waited and specific steps you will take in trying to find them in the store, restaurant, business, etc. you were at.

No one plans on having an accident but it happens. And the reality is there is probability of it happening while we are far from home. Whether it be travel for your work or a family vacation, an accident can happen. Do you know how to prepare or what to do in case of an accident while in another state?

HAVE THE RIGHT COVERAGE

When is the last time you have read your insurance policy or discussed it with your agent? It is important to not only know the amounts covered for an accident but the ‘extras’ that may be needed after an accident. These are usually the extras that are trimmed to make the premium lower but definitely help with an accident.

First, not every accident is a minor ‘fender bender’. Unfortunately, accidents may cause enough damage to where the vehicle cannot be driven. When that happens, the car will need to be towed to a shop for repairs. Many insurance providers offer towing insurance to protect yourself from a large expense. Each year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration collects information about traffic accidents, including collisions that cause fatalities. Recently, AVVO evaluated that data and reported their observations. And while AVVO is a directory that helps people find attorneys to represent them, their report of the risky driving times is interesting.

DAY OR NIGHT?

Of course, bad weather can put us all at risk more than ideal driving conditions. But considering mild weather, when is the worst time of day to drive? The answer is discouraging. Millions of Americans drive to work each day. With heavier numbers of vehicles, chances, of course, increase the risk of an accident. But, while most may assume the overnight hours are the most dangerous, the actual riskiest time is 4pm to 7pm. It seems America is not in a rush to get to work, but rather, are anxious to get home AFTER work. This ‘after work’ rush time is worse than the morning commute and hours overnight where drivers have a higher chance of being impaired. In fact, the 2nd worst time is 7pm to 9:59pm.

There are several reasons for the 4pm-7pm risk…people are tired after a long day at work, stress is higher because of the work day, and during certain times of the year, the evening sun is a dangerous factor for the most seasoned driver.

DAY OF THE WEEK

The most recent statistics are proving one day is the most dangerous of the week. Saturday is the riskiest day of the week, on a national average, for deadly accidents. This is probably not shocking, due to more careless driving on the weekends. But interestingly, for us Oklahomans, Friday is the worst day. In fact, Oklahoma made the list of the Top 5 in the nation for fatalities as a result of an accident on Friday.

HOW TO DECREASE RISK

Of course we can’t stop traveling altogether to avoid these riskier driving times. We just can’t choose to stop our daily commutes, especially in Oklahoma, with more miles than many states between towns. But what we should do is the usual safe practices. During these dangerous times, as well as at all times, staying away from distracted driving is safest. Keep your mind and eyes on the road and hands on the wheel.

Also, increased traffic usually means congestion. Make sure you have plenty of room around other vehicles and when stopped in traffic, have a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU HAVE A COLLISION WITH AN UNINSURED DRIVER

Oklahoma has some of the highest numbers of uninsured drivers in the nation. The number of uninsured motorists has declined in recent years but is over 10 percent. Auto insurance is in place to cover medical and auto body costs if an accident occurs. But what if the driver who hits your vehicle doesn’t have insurance, what to do?

IDENTIFICATION/INFORMATION

If there are none or minor injuries, steps should then be taken to determine and address an uninsured driver. First, note the time of the accident and either write it down or take a photo with your phone’s camera. Also, the same should be done to record location of the accident.

Next, gather information from the driver. If they reveal they are not insured, you should ask for a full name, birth name, current address, employer, phone numbers, email address and finally take a photo of their driver’s license. And if they do not own the vehicle, collect the same information for the owner of the vehicle.

If there is a hit and run, try to capture the car on your phone and at the very least be sure to remember their plate number.

POLICE/WITNESSES

It is always best to involve the police when your vehicle is hit by an uninsured driver. After determining the other driver is uninsured, call the police as quickly as possible so the police can help to gather information, but most importantly, make a report of the incident.

As you wait for the police to arrive, you can gather any contact information from any witnesses that stayed around to assist. This is also a good time to take photos of the surrounding area and the vehicles involved, including damage photos. All information collected will answer questions and help to resolve any issues with your insurance or any civil suits.

INSURANCE

Now is the time to discuss your insurance coverage with your agent…after reading this and BEFORE an accident happens. Get to know your coverage. How much damage is covered if you are at fault? How much medical do you have? Ask about uninsured motorist coverage and what is covered. Also, is your coverage enough for the average accident? Car prices go up quicker than state minimums for coverage. Are you going to come up short?

If you are unfortunately involved in an accident with an at-fault, uninsured driver, your vehicle can still be repaired with your insurance coverage. Your insurance provider will help you file a claim. Any claim will result in a loss of deductible and other costs such as a rental car. These costs can possibly be recovered by suing the other driver in civil court.

It is Oklahoma state law to have auto insurance. When a vehicle is financed or leased, the banking institutions will require more coverage, but a vehicle that is paid off is only required to carry liability insurance. Not all drivers follow the rules, so protect your investment with adequate insurance and collecting all relevant information after an accident.

MOST VEHICLES WILL EXPERIENCE POLYMER DEGRADATION…WHY IT’S DANGEROUS

Automobiles have transformed through the decades, adding more technology and using less metal. Whether it is for a better appearance or better function, vehicles have more polymer parts than the vehicles of the past. But, polymer is a material that can suffer degradation. And unfortunately, millions of autos are affected each year.

WHAT IT IS AND WHY IT’S BAD

Polymer materials include rubber, vinyl, and various plastics, and is in exterior car parts like bumpers, black trim around windows, fenders, and windshields. It’s also in spoilers, air dams, and other aerodynamic body features.

Because this material suffers degradation, these parts on your automobile not only have loss of glossy appearance and faded color, there is reduced strength, decreased flexibility, and less scratch resistance.

This degradation can make for a less than safe vehicle. Bumpers, especially are installed to help protect us and our vehicles from worse damage.

CAUSES

Various elements hurt the polymer on trucks and cars. The worst culprits are sunlight, air pollution, road tar, salt, and oil. These all will break down the material over time.

The exposure to sunlight can be worse if a vehicle is out in UV rays all day long. This is because it is accelerated and becomes ‘photodegradation.’

WHAT TO DO

Extra care should be taken with this material. If you can, your automobile should be parked in a covered area away from the sun. But we know that’s not always possible, so products must be applied to protect these areas.

3 REASONS WHY MINOR BUMPER DAMAGE SHOULD NOT BE IGNORED

Minor bumper damage can happen while in traffic or while parking, in your own garage, or at work. It is unexpected, but even if the damage is minor, it should not be ignored.

SAFETY

Bumpers are on vehicles to lessen damage to certain areas of the auto and to increase the safety of the occupants. When minor incidents happen, we are thankful that it was not worse and thankful it wasn’t more expensive. Because the damage is so minor, it is often put aside to address later or not at all. But since the bumpers are in place to protect, even minor damage can harm the integrity of this safety.

Bumpers are built with reinforcements that may include such material as styrofoam. If the material under the bumper is damaged, the next impact could be worse when the original damage is not repaired.

BIG BROTHER HELPS OKLAHOMA’S UNINSURED PROBLEM

In 2017, Oklahoma passed legislation for a program to combat uninsured drivers. Unfortunately, the state of Oklahoma is one of the worst states in the nation, showing a 50% chance of a two vehicle accident involving one uninsured motorist. The law in Oklahoma requires the minimum of all drivers to have liability insurance of 25/50/25. And in our state, over 600,000 motorists aren’t in compliance. This program is in place now to help the costly consequences of uninsured driving.

WHAT IS UVED?

UVED stands for The Uninsured Vehicle Enforcement Diversion Program. It is the first of its kind in the U.S. The program UVED will use “Automatic License Plate Readers” (ALPR), which will canvass Oklahoma roadways to capture and identify license plates of uninsured vehicles. These cameras will be both fixed AND mobile. Remember the new license plates with the Scissortail Flycatcher being introduced in Oklahoma? Those license plates were designed to include technology that allows them to be scanned by these cameras. These cameras take that information and then run it through a database to show if the vehicle is currently insured.

WHO REGULATES?

All insurers are in the database and while the Insurance Commission is assisting in this program, the actual regulator is the Oklahoma District Attorneys’ Council. This decision was made to not burden the already busy law enforcement agencies in the state.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

This program did not cost the state of Oklahoma anything to implement. In the past, when an uninsured motorist was caught by law enforcement, a fine of $250 was issued and possible criminal charges could have followed in certain circumstances. With this program, when a license plate that has been scanned, has come back as non compliant, a notice is sent from DAC to respond and it issues a $174 fee. The driver will then have to become insured to avoid any future charges. The fine is less than it was with law enforcement agencies. Some of that fee will go to the company who designed the system to pay for the cameras, etc.

Once the plate is scanned, unless it is flagged, the plate number will be flushed out of system. The plate numbers are not to be shared.

The program is in place now. Perhaps later, we will report its success. The $9 million in costs for innocent drivers with damage and injury is something that needed to be addressed.

AVOID COLLISIONS IN BAD WINTER WEATHER WITH THESE HELPFUL TRICKS

It’s bound to happen…hazardous roads in Oklahoma due to weather conditions. The weathermen suggest to stay home, but what if you have to get to work? Weather related collisions can be some of the most frustrating because insurance carriers largely fault all drivers involved. To avoid a collision due to bad winter weather, try these helpful tricks.

EQUIPMENT CHECK

Vital auto equipment should be checked and problems fixed before winter weather happens. This equipment includes brakes, tires, and wiper blades.

Your tires are very important because they are what connects you to the road. It is suggested the tire tread be at a minimum of 6/32 for less than perfect road conditions. Take your vehicle to the nearest tire shop and they will look at your tires for free to get you a tread measurement.

Next, brakes should be in top performance condition. Although automatic braking systems assist in stopping, they can’t be fully relied upon. But, all brakes will work better if not worn out. So, now is the time to check those brake parts!

Other equipment that should be at their best is wiper blades for increased visibility. Wiper blades should be replaced at least each year, especially if the vehicle spends a large amount of time exposed to the elements.

Finally, make sure headlights are on and not covered by snow, even during the day.

EXPERT MANEUVERS

If you do have to get on the dangerous roads and find yourself in a sliding situation, there are ways to decrease your chances of collision.

For a front skid, it is best to slowly take foot away from the accelerator. Instantly applying the brake will only make the slide worse.

If the back end is sliding, turn into the slide, slightly. With both sliding situations, once the slide has become controlled, that is you have taken back control of the car, then a brake can be applied.

SPEED

This is Rule #1 that should be taken the most seriously. Stopping time should be doubled to at least 10 seconds. This means not only should you decrease speed, but increase the space between you and the next car. Just remember…the faster you go, the worse the damage could be.

You may be in the market for a new vehicle. Be sure to check for these safety features. Some cars already include all of them! And if you aren’t needing to buy a vehicle anytime soon, rest assured, by the time you’re ready, these safety features will be on most, if not all vehicles.

AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING (AEB)

This safety feature is new technology that is helpful in avoiding rear-end collisions, which account for more than 40% of all crashes. The system first alerts the driver if the sensors detect a potential crash. If the operator does not correct in time, this feature will apply the brakes to avoid or lessen the impact.

Be sure to ask the car dealership if the automatic braking is included. These systems could also be named DBS, dynamic braking system or CIB, crash imminent braking.

ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL (ACC)

This feature may not be on a priority list unless there is a need for it because of long drives on highways. But this does come in handy for road trips. This safety feature will make that vacation travel even safer for your family.

It works much like the emergency braking, in that the sensors help to regulate the safe distance with your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If the vehicle in front of you slows speed, the Adaptive Cruise Control will calculate the change and decrease your vehicle’s speed, making for a safe distance always between you and the next car.

BLIND SPOT DETECTION

Vehicle designs will never eliminate the feared blind spot. To assist with the dreaded blind spots, technology is used to detect vehicles you may not see. If there is a vehicle detected, visual and/or audible warnings will happen, such as a blinking light in the side mirror. When changing lanes, this feature is most helpful because not all vehicles can be seen in mirrors or over the shoulder.

Beyond blind spot detection, is cross traffic alert. This system can aid in parking situations when an approaching car is not seen.

LANE ASSIST

There are two technologies that will help you stay in your lane while driving. You may be tired or you had to look over your shoulder and your car may drift to another lane. This is a very dangerous situation so the safety technology invented helps to correct it by either alerting you or even steering your wheel for you, keeping you in the lane.

Lane Departure Warning is just that, a warning that you are about to drift into another lane. If a turning signal is on, this detection system is automatically disabled. The other system is Lane Keep. If you fall asleep at the wheel, your vehicle is safely steered in the straight lane. Tired driving should always be avoided as this can’t be relied on completely.

CAMERA TECHNOLOGY

You probably already know or have seen rearview cameras in vehicles. This technology was installed to assist in backing up. The device could not only detect objects, but you can also see them on the screen.

Cameras are expanding to other areas of the vehicle, increasing your overall safety. Besides front and rear cameras, automakers are starting to include aerial views of your vehicle.

BE AWARE OF STAGED ACCIDENTS

Unfortunately dishonest people use illegal ways of getting money from insurance companies by causing intentional ‘accidents.’ These staged accidents can be used for claims against their own insurance or even your provider. Here’s how to identify and protect yourself from staged accidents.

TYPES OF STAGED ACCIDENTS

One type of staged accident is called the Panic Stop. This scam begins with a vehicle that pulls in front of you. A passenger of the vehicle or even the driver will then watch for you to be distracted. That’s when they will hit their brakes, resulting in a rear-end collision. Often the occupant OR occupants will claim physical injury such as whiplash or back pain, on top of the damage to the vehicle.

Another staged accident is the Drive Down. This could be attempted in a few scenarios, so be aware. One way is when you’re attempting to merge into traffic and you’re waved into proceeding. That other motorist will then hit your car and deny waving you into traffic. This is also being done in parking lots.

The Swoop And Squat is a bit more complex. It involves two vehicles causing a collision. The swoop car will move in front of you, then the squat car will be in front of them. The squat car will hit its brakes, causing the swoop car to do the same. If following too closely, the victim will hit the swoop car. The squat car will then drive off, leaving the impression there were only two vehicles involved.

HOW TO GUARD YOURSELF

The best way to protect yourself from collision is to keep your distance with other vehicles. This can’t always be done with the above scenarios, but trusting your gut and staying clear of suspicious vehicles is a smart choice.

With the Drive Down, it is best to wait until traffic is safely clear for proceeding into traffic or parking. Even though we want to believe people are being helpful, waving us in, it is wise to make that move only when it is safe.

Another safeguard is a dash cam. Investing in this technology can help with bogus insurance claims. And our autos are becoming more and more advanced with computers that help to monitor and record such incidents.

THE GOOD NEWS

Insurance companies are aware of these attempts at fraud and are cracking down. Because of these staged events, premiums rose for everyone, not just victims.

TOWING

Not only are accidents unplanned, so is the specific damage. Collision damage may occur where the auto engine is located and driving the car cannot happen because of the damage. Even a simple fender bender could make the auto unable to be driven with a hanging bumper.

In order to not cause further damage, or in the case of a vehicle that can’t be driven, towing will be necessary. But towing can be very costly! Unfortunately it is not one flat charge, there are several and they can add up to a huge amount. Besides the actual towing, there may be fuel or mileage charges, storage fees, and possibly after hour fees. To avoid what could be hundreds of dollars on TOP of a deductible, add towing coverage to your policy when available.

RENTAL CAR

Even with the latest processes and technology, repairs to a vehicle could take awhile. Due to delivery of parts, when required, and to the repairs being done right, you could be without transportation for some time.

When another vehicle is needed to get to work, or other places, a rental car is an option. Rental cars come in various sizes and range accordingly with the daily rate. But just like with towing, there are many fees attached, such as mileage. If repairs to your vehicle take a few days or a few weeks, the daily charge will be hefty, especially with an out-of-pocket insurance deductible. But there will be times when the paint is chipped and will need to be repainted to avoid further chipping, and even worse…rust. Our experts will carefully evaluate your vehicle. If there is damage to the paint, they will show you the areas and we will perform expertly matched paint with your repairs.

THE PROCESS

First, we begin the paint process by expertly matching the color of your vehicle. Technology advancement has made this step very precise. After your auto is prepared for paint with cleaning, taping, etc. it is moved into our paint chamber. This room is specifically designed for paint application. On top of our technicians being certified, we have this area to ensure the best paint application for your automobile. It is closed off so there is a better environment for wet paint, staying away from the dust in other areas of the shop.

After paint is applied, it is baked. It’s not completely different or completely the same as baking that Christmas ham, but very necessary in the completion of your repair. This baking helps the vehicle take the paint much better and it also dries it much faster which does two things…further protects the car during this faster drying time and gets you back on the road, quicker.

WASHING YOUR VEHICLE

There is information on the internet advising to skip washing your vehicle after new paint. This is simply not the case! Because of the process we use, it is ok to wash your vehicle after paint has been applied. Freeman Collision includes a detail wash with all repairs, but if needed after that, you may wash your car. We always suggest though, with any vehicle to skip harsh brush systems. This will help to avoid unnecessary scratching. Whenever possible, the best wash for the car is with a soft cloth and mild car wash solution.

HOW TO EXTEND PAINT LIFE

Be mindful of putting gas into the tank, avoiding any contact with the paint. If any spills occur, wipe off using a soft cloth, wet with clean water.

Also, when having an oil change or any other work performed, make sure harsh chemicals do not touch the paint, such as antifreeze or transmission fluid.

As always, certain road hazards will happen. When on any road, never follow any other vehicle too closely. This doesn’t only mean semi or work trucks, any vehicle is capable of kicking up a pebble from the roadway.

Do not use gravel roads whenever possible. In Oklahoma, this may be unavoidable, so proceed as slow as possible to decrease the rocks from hitting your vehicle.

THE NEW NUMBERS FOR HIT AND RUN AND THEY’RE NOT GOOD

The numbers are alarming. No matter if it is a vehicle hitting another vehicle, a pedestrian or cyclist, and then driving away, hit-and-run occurrences are increasing across the board.

ON THE RISE

There are over 680,000 hit-and-run crashes each year. This average has gone up considerably in the last 30 years. This number also means a hit-and-run accident happens every minute in the United States. And unfortunately, deaths, as a result of hit and run, have also climbed. In fact the increase was 60% from 2009.

Florida and California have some of the highest numbers of incidents. Oklahoma is not one of the states with higher numbers. However, there are reasons behind the numbers. One reason for the increase in accidents is increase in population. The percentage of these being hit and run is also due to various reasons, including not having or not having enough auto insurance. With Oklahoma being a state with one of the highest numbers of uninsured drivers, hit-and-run accidents could climb.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hitting a car, pedestrian, or cyclist while in traffic, then driving away, is a hit and run. But did you know hitting a parked car and driving away is also a hit and run? And leaving a note may not be enough. It is suggested that when you hit another car that is parked, you wait for the owner for at least 15 minutes, then try to locate the owner. When both have failed, you may then leave a note for the owner.

PROTECTION AND PROCEDURE

Not only should you protect yourself if you hit a parked car, you should protect yourself when you are a victim of a hit and run.

Your first protection is the proper insurance. Speak with your provider about supplemental insurance that will help cushion the financial burden if you are hit by someone who drives away.

If you or your vehicle are hit by someone who drives away, ask witnesses for their help in documenting the event.

Also use technology by recording everything from damage to location of the accident. Many businesses and intersections now have cameras, so ask for the footage. It is true, many of these drivers are never identified, but some states are moving to Amber Alert style warnings that will help decrease those that get away.

Finally, many drivers that have been involved in a hit-and-run accident are impaired/distracted. Keep a safe distance from observed vehicles that display erratic behavior.

Whether this is the best time because kids are out of school or you and that special person want to get away, Oklahoma has some great sights and destinations for a weekend trip. Here are some fun Oklahoma weekend drives to fill up your summer.

UNUSUAL ATTRACTIONS

Load up the car and get ready to see some unusual attractions in our great state. Oklahoma is known for its many beautiful lakes, but what if you’ve seen them all? Well then it’s time to drive to the center of the universe! That’s right, Oklahoma boasts an attraction, in downtown Tulsa, named The Center of the Universe. The spot is an acoustic anomaly that reverberates the voice no matter the direction. When you go, look for a concrete spot marking the area and be sure to check-in on social media so people will wonder where exactly you are!

Some other attractions you more than likely can’t find anywhere else are artistic creations. In Chelsea, Oklahoma, there is a park that houses many totem polls, including the world’s largest. These totem polls, all created by their owner, are adorned with many details of art. A fantastic sight!

Also, a husband takes art in a fun direction for his wife who loves gardening. This special site is in Nowata, Oklahoma and is decorated with many sculptures created with bowling balls and pins. This is something you don’t see every day!

FOR THE VIEW

Perhaps you just want to see the prettiest nature Oklahoma has to offer. A calming drive for just the drive can be a perfect day trip, getting away from the stresses of life.

Along the crest of Rich Mountain and Winding Star Mountain, in the Ouachita National Forest, is The Talimena Scenic Byway. The USDA National Forest Scenic Byway Program established the Talimena because of the popularity of driving for pleasure, so it’s perfect for an Oklahoma drive! Although 54 total miles are included, some of those are in Arkansas. Even if you decide to stay only in Oklahoma, this short drive can last almost a day if you explore all the turnouts and stop at the designated vistas, which are the most incredible in the state!

And for a bit longer drive, is an 84 mile stretch that follows Highway 10 to Highway 412. Designated in 2008, The Cherokee Hills Cultural Byway highlights the Illinois River and towering bluffs.

When driving, you will always get an appetite! Oklahoma has some great spots that are perfect for your weekend drives.

With a background setting of a town from the Old West, Sipkoni West is located in Reagan, Oklahoma. Only opened Thursday through Saturday, this spot is a great stop on your weekend destination list. Created as a movie set, the location has several buildings that are similar to life in the 1880s. And for the kicker, The Lost Spur Cafe serves up homemade comfort food!

THE HIDDEN DAMAGE UNDER A FENDER BENDER

‘Fender Bender’ is often the term used for minor accidents. There appears to be little damage on the outside of the vehicle. Depending on the type of vehicle, spot of impact, and speed, the actual damage could be more than just the body. These are the hidden damages that might be under a fender bender.

ELECTRICAL

Accidents may result with damage beyond the hood or bumper, especially ones with a front end impact. The electrical system could be jarred during this type of accident. This is damage that is not seen, so it is important that everything is inspected and tested. Examples include wires that may have been severed or just even disconnected. The car’s battery system could have resulted in a short which could eventually cause power doors, windows, or antitheft system to malfunction.

ALIGNMENT AND FRAME

The bumpers on most vehicles are designed to provide some protection for the automobile but they don’t guard completely against damage. Underneath your auto is framework for your vehicle, called a frame. This frame can be bent in an accident. Frame inspection and adjustment can be performed when there is damage so the vehicle will operate correctly. This includes air bag deployment.

And along with the frame, alignment may have been affected. A car or truck should always drive straight unless turning. Any pulling to the left or right must be checked as hidden damage with a fender bender.

OTHER MECHANICAL

Other areas that need inspection after a fender bender are transmission, steering, and the engine.

Even a low impact collision can cause damage to driving systems. AWD autos can have drive shafts get knocked into the transmission because of a front or rear end accident.

PREPARING YOUR FIRST TIME DRIVER

It is an exciting time for teens to obtain that freedom of driving. Parents and guardians alike, however, face a difficult time not only letting go, but preparing their teen. Here are some helpful tips in preparing your first time driver.

DRIVING KNOW HOW

Driver’s education has moved away from school to companies. What would be daily instruction for weeks has evolved into a few drives with an instructor. To ensure your teen is ready, some extra time is necessary with instruction. This could be stressful, but in the long run, beneficial for their experience.

Besides acceleration and braking, there are areas that need practice. Turning is somewhat strange for first time drivers so it should be included each driving session with both left and right turns. Turning should also be with wide and tight turns, challenging them.

Once turning has been learned, changing lanes would be a next step. This is a perfect time to discuss blind spots and mirror usage.

Parking is easily practiced with a parking lot. This can begin with an empty parking lot and then progress to lots with other vehicles. Don’t forget the parallel parking! If there is no opportunity close for parallel parking, use a curb and some buckets to mimic the parking situation.

Be sure to have them drive during different weather conditions too, if given the chance.

There are other areas, such as passing and merging onto highways. Each time you are behind the wheel, make a mental note of your own experience to add to your teen’s driving practice.

VEHICLE FAMILIARITY

Learning HOW to drive isn’t the only thing important for your teen to learn, they must also know how to fully operate the vehicle they will be using.

This is the time to pull out the owner’s manual to familiarize them with their car or truck. They should know how to find the areas in the manual.

Next, a tour around the vehicle is needed to locate and learn the functions. If your driver hasn’t driven in rain, make sure they know where to find and how to use the wipers. Your driver has hopefully practiced driving at night, so they should know about the headlights, including the bright setting, but do they know where the fuses are? All controls and gadgets should be discussed and practiced several times for familiarity.

No one wants to be stuck with a flat tire but a stranded teen is a scary thought. If your teen does have a spare in their vehicle, teach them to change it properly so they can return to the road and then to a repair shop.

Light maintenance is also a good idea to teach. Educate them about the fluids needed and why, including oil.

INSURANCE AND ACCIDENTS

The scariest part about a first time driver might be the shock of insurance price. This could be a good teaching moment though. Discuss the insurance policy, terms, coverage and cost. Explain the process of claims and consequences of accidents and tickets.

VEHICLE SPRINGTIME MAINTENANCE

Wintertime affects vehicles. Whether it be the cold temperatures and snow or the strong sun and dry air, certain care is in order to fix winter wear. Here is a vehicle springtime maintenance list covering those areas.

UNDER THE HOOD

Your springtime maintenance should begin under the hood, then external check, ending with paint and body.

Because cold temperatures and rubber don’t mix, hoses and belts need to be checked. Hoses need to be looked over for hardening, leaking, cracks, or other visual damage. Check, or have checked, belts for looseness, fraying, or cracking. Also, remove debris from the engine area, such as leaves, pine needles, and road salt. All can block vents and drainage holes.

The cold weather also makes the battery work harder. Signs that it has decreased power are dimming headlights, weaker interior lights and powered components, such as windows, taking longer to go up or down. Make sure that the battery components are also clean and corrosion free.

Air filters should be replaced at this time. The cabin filter, especially, had heavy use with windows closed and heater on. Get it ready and clean for the days when you need air conditioning.

Fluids should be topped off or replaced for clean running. The winter may have run down wiper fluid more than anything else, so be sure to resupply.

EXTERNAL CHECKS

And with that wiper fluid refill, now is the time to prepare for Spring showers, replacing wiper blades. Blades should be replaced every 6 months. Spring and Fall are the perfect times.

Brakes should be inspected for any corrosion because of salt on roads and the winter weather. Also, anti-lock brakes work harder with slick conditions so make sure they are ready for the rainy months. If the vehicle is pulling to one side while braking or if there is a grinding sound, brakes more than likely need attention.

This is a great time to realign tires that might have hit some bumps or even potholes created by winter storms. Tires that are not aligned or worn unevenly, end up being a costly expense, so maintenance is important.

PAINT/BODY

After washing your vehicle, look over for paint damage. This damage happens with road salt and other debris. Repair is necessary when rusting is a concern.

Next, the car/truck will appreciate a good waxing. This waxing will also help with rain in upcoming months.

Finally, the winter sun, just like in the summer, fades black surfaces. Renew them with a good gloss cleaner, remembering to apply on a cloth first, avoiding product making contact with paint, wheels, or brakes.

I HAD A WRECK AND MY CAR IS INOPERABLE, WHERE DOES IT GO WHEN THE SHOP ISN’T OPEN?

Wrecks are already not planned, but even more, they can happen on the weekend or at night. If your vehicle is unable to be driven, you will need to have it towed. The reputable towing service will tow your vehicle to their storage lot. Once you contact us, we will then send our towing service to pick up your auto and bring it to the shop during operating hours. It is important you either have a tow company you trust or use the company the police suggest at the time of the accident. Do not agree to towing operators who just show up on the scene. And when calling around, establish tow and storage rates with any other fees. NOW is the time to ask friends for their recommendations for a towing company and keep the contact information handy in your wallet.

HOW BAD DOES A WRECK HAVE TO BE TO TOTAL A CAR?

It depends on a lot of factors. Insurance companies vary from state to state with their evaluation procedures and with their percentages set for loss. As the best example, we will use the state of Oklahoma. If your insurance provider calculates the repair costs to equal more than 60% of its value, chances are they will ‘total’ the vehicle. The national average is around 70-78%. Consult with your provider about your policy and their practice. Also, please remember not all damage may be seen. We have seen animals, that run out on the road unexpectedly, cause enough damage to ‘total’ vehicles.

WILL MY WARRANTY BE VOID WITH MY NEW CAR AFTER AN ACCIDENT?

A warranty is only voided when a vehicle has been declared a totaled loss and given a salvage title.

SHOULD I FILE A CLAIM OR PAY FOR IT MYSELF?

There are many things to be considered before deciding. First, is this a one auto accident or more? If there are more vehicles than your own and you are at fault, it is always best to make a claim. This will cover you in the event of injury and damages that others have suffered. If it is only your vehicle, however, depending on the cost of damage vs the cost of deductible, a small ding might be better coming from your pocket and saving on future premium hikes. DO REPLACEMENT PARTS NEED PAINTING?

Sometimes parts come painted, like bumpers or moldings, but others that come will need paint. But, the parts that come painted might not match your present paint because of natural aging, exposure, or wear. These parts will look better if our experts mix to apply a perfect match. The newer your vehicle, and more protection against the elements, the better chance a replacement part that comes painted, could match the rest of the vehicle.

CAN I BUY PAINT FROM THE DEALERSHIP OR FACTORY?

The dealership or factory may have paint but it is meant for the tiniest of touchup jobs. When applied with bigger repairs, the new paint will appear splotchy due to the overall tint of the vehicle changed with time or being exposed to weather. It’s best to have the current paint matched by our state-of-the-art equipment and expertly applied with techniques for seamless matching.

WHY IS A SEALER NEEDED?

The term is misleading. A sealer is actually applied first, before any paint. A sealer is used to help prepare the surface for paint. It creates a more smooth surface, especially needed when bodywork was done. A clear coat is what is last after color applications. It is added to help with shine, protection, and overall uniform appearance.

HOW LONG WILL MY PAINT LAST ON MY REPAIRED VEHICLE?

We guarantee the work of our certified technicians to ensure the application of all paint. There are varying lifetimes of paint appearance however. This is because of the different experiences of each vehicle. The better care for a vehicle with regular waxing will lengthen the life of paint’s appearance. The vehicle who is housed in a garage vs the auto that is not, will have a better appearance for longer. Keeping the vehicle out of the elements, such as harsh sun, will keep the paint nice. STEERING IS AGAINST THE LAW

WHAT IS STEERING?

We aren’t referring to the use of a steering wheel. ‘Steering’ is also a term used for the practice of insurance providers suggesting specific body shops for repairs and it’s against the law. The insurance companies are essentially ‘steering’ their customers to a shop that is on their list. This ‘steering’ is against the law in Oklahoma. Even if your insurance company is based in another state, Oklahoma law protects against this practice. Every person who operates a motor vehicle has the option of choosing what shop they use to fix their vehicle.

HOW TO RECOGNIZE

Your insurance company may suggest a body shop as their preferred choice, it may even be a list of shops. Other times the steering isn’t so apparent. Insurance providers may not directly suggest a certain shop but instead state such claims as ‘work will not be warrantied with the shop you chose’ or ‘work will be delayed because an adjuster will have to inspect’ and ‘that shop won’t agree with our appraiser.’ Other ways insurance companies steer you to contracted shops is stating rental cars won’t be covered or costs of repairs will be lower with their shops.

The truth is warranties are offered by the body shops not insurance companies. Every reputable shop will offer a warranty on their work and include the warranties of the parts. Also, time is of the essence with claims and the process is guided by certain deadlines. Any delays suggested by insurance provider, for NOT using a preferred shop, are simply untrue.

THE DANGERS OF STEERING AND WHAT YOU CAN DO

No matter if the steering is obvious or disguised in misleading statements, the contracted shops that are being used by insurance providers, work for the insurance providers not the consumer. They want to keep the work coming from the insurance companies, so they will contract for lower pricing. What this means for a person, who has suffered damage to their vehicle, is possible corners being cut to keep the bottom line low. Whether it is for convenience or lower costs with substandard parts, a ‘preferred’ shop may not be in your best interest. Safety and quality workmanship should be the priority with any repairs.

HOW WELL DO YOU KNOW YOUR AUTO INSURANCE?

Have you read your auto insurance policy? Do you know your coverage amounts? Are you prepared with rental car coverage or protection with underinsured motorists? If you are unsure of any of these answers, keep reading to understand your auto insurance.

COVERAGE

Coverage is the type of insurance that is ‘covered.’ The minimum insurance requirement, in the state of Oklahoma, is liability coverage with minimum limits set at 25/50/25. This can be purchased when there is no money owed on the vehicle and the vehicle is not leased. The important thing to know about liability is it does not cover costs of your own vehicle or injuries. Liability covers other persons injured and their damaged vehicles when you are at fault in a collision and ONLY up to the limits of your liability coverage.

Collision coverage is needed to cover damage to your vehicle. (*Deductible applies) Medical coverage is needed for injuries you yourself sustain and is up to the limits you set.

But these both are for accidents/collisions. So what is needed to help protect you in the case of damage caused by storms or if the vehicle is stolen? Comprehensive is added to insure your vehicle against theft, storm damage, vandalism, and when struck by an animal. (*Deductible applies)

OTHER COVERAGE TO CONSIDER

Often, when an accident happens or an auto has suffered damage, a rental vehicle is needed while the auto is being repaired. Most insurance providers offer this option. It is wise to discuss with your agent, however. Some providers are changing what they will cover and establishing a percentage such as 80/20, with 20% being out of pocket. Rental insurance is usually not automatic, so it must be added.

Another extra coverage is uninsured motorists protection. Uninsured motorists protection pays for bodily injury damages to you, members of your family who live with you, and other other people in vehicle who are injured by an uninsured motorist, a hit-and-run motorist, or an insured motorist who does not have enough liability insurance to pay for bodily injury damages to any insured person.

OTHER TERMS

Once coverage is set with amounts, a premium and deductible can be adjusted. Read last month’s blog and how these amounts are calculated.

*Deductibles-The money you agree to pay out of pocket when a claim is made against comprehensive or collision on your policy. For example…if your deductible is $500 and repairs from an accident or comprehensive loss total $1,500, you will be responsible for paying the first $500 to the repair shop. The insurance company pays the remaining $1000.

In the state of Oklahoma, auto insurance is required for operating a motor vehicle. Lending institutions will require more insurance to protect their investments, but if you own your vehicle outright, only liability is required. LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

As with real estate, location matters. It might not be an option for you to move, but insurance companies DO look at location. First, states even vary from state to state. Based on accident frequency and weather, one state might be higher than another. Oklahoma usually suffers because of storms we experience.

Beyond the state, the city you live in is important in evaluating coverage. Do you live in a rural community or perhaps an urban area with more crime? And even your residence is considered. Especially in Oklahoma, insurance companies charge less for vehicles that are protected from the elements or theft. Having an enclosed garage is easier on the monthly premium.

RISK EVALUATION

Not only do insurance companies care where you live, they care about how much of a risk you might be. Of course, your driving record is most important. If you have had past accident claims and speeding infractions, your premiums will reflect that risk.

Also, age, sex, and marital status are figured into your insurance. Drivers aged 25 and younger have higher payments simply because of their inexperience behind the wheel, with males being higher. Again, safe driving will help at this time to keep the payments lower. And don’t forget to keep up the good grades if you are a student, it will help rates.

How is your credit score? Insurance companies will look at your score to determine your risk. The claim is if there is a lower credit rating, the driver is more likely to take risks with driving. Cleaning up your credit and achieving a decent score will help to save on insurance.

The Insurance Institute For Highway Safety conducts 5 crashworthiness tests, as well as front crash prevention. EVALUATE SITUATION

If you haven’t had a recent oil change, this is a good place to start.
